How It Works
Tangem wallets are cold storage devices that store your private keys securely off the internet on a certified chip. You use them by tapping the device (card or ring) against your NFC-enabled smartphone with the Tangem Wallet app installed.
The app displays balances and lets you manage assets, but all critical cryptographic signing happens inside the secure chip. You never expose your private keys to the phone or internet.
Tangem Card: A credit-card-sized device you carry in your wallet.
Tangem Ring: A wearable wallet in a zirconia ceramic ring form. Includes two backup cards in the package for recovery.
When initiating a transaction, the app sends details to the hardware wallet, which signs it internally and returns the signed transaction to the app for broadcasting.
Tangem Card and Ring
Both are hardware wallets, but they serve slightly different preferences:
Tangem Card

- Looks and feels like a credit card but functions as a cold wallet storing your private keys on a secured chip.
- No battery or screen, it uses NFC to communicate with your phone.
- You can buy sets (2–3 cards) so you have physical backups instead of seed phrases.
Tangem Ring

- A wearable hardware wallet that works the same way as a card: tap it to your smartphone to sign transactions.
- Stylish and convenient if you want crypto access without carrying a card.
- Includes two backup cards in the package so you still have redundancy.
- Same security chip and protections as the cards (EAL6+ certified, waterproof/dustproof, durable).

Cold Storage. Zero Complexity.
Secure your crypto with a card that fits in your wallet. No cables, no batteries, no firmware stress. Just tap and approve with full offline protection.

Security
Security is a core strength of Tangem wallets:
- EAL6+ certified Secure Element: This is a high-grade chip security standard designed to resist both physical and logical attack vectors.
- Private key isolation: Keys are generated and stored inside the chip and never leave it.
- Non-upgradable firmware: Tangem firmware is intentionally not updateable, reducing risk of remote compromise.
- Independent audits: Reviews by reputable firms (like Kudelski and Riscure) found no backdoors or vulnerabilities.
- No internet or Bluetooth: Only NFC is used, limiting exposure to remote threats.
- Smart backups: With the ring, your keys are backed up across the ring and its two cards in a way that preserves full security.
These protections make Tangem a true cold wallet solution — your keys stay offline and inaccessible to online hackers.

Tangem vs. Other Cold Wallets
Compared with traditional hardware wallets (like Ledger or Trezor):
| Feature | Tangem | Ledger/Trezor |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | NFC only | USB/Bluetooth |
| Need for seed phrase | Optional | Mandatory |
| Firmware updates | None | Required |
| Portability | Very high (card/ring) | Medium (dedicated device) |
| Durability | Waterproof/dustproof | Varies |
| Ease of use | Instant tap setup | More complex setup |
Tangem’s approach removes seed-phrase management and simplifies use, making it approachable for beginners while still maintaining a high security standard. Other cold wallets offer more control features (e.g., screens, desktop apps) but require more setup and maintenance.

FAQs
Do I need seed phrases with Tangem?
No — the default is seedless with physical backup cards or devices, though you can import or export a seed phrase if you want traditional backup options.
What happens if I lose my card or ring?
If you set up multiple cards or have the backup cards that come with the ring, you can restore access with any of them.
Can someone hack it remotely?
No. Because private keys are stored offline in the secure chip and there’s no internet or wireless aside from NFC, remote hacking is highly improbable.
Will my phone store my private keys?
No — the phone is just an interface. The private keys remain inside the Tangem device.
Does it support multiple cryptocurrencies?
Yes — Tangem supports thousands of coins and tokens across many blockchains via the app.
